In the ever-evolving landscape of electric vehicles, the luxury SUV segment has witnessed a rapid influx of contenders. Two noteworthy entrants vying for the spotlight are the 2024 Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV and the 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70. Despite their mouthful of names, these electrified offerings from Mercedes-Benz and Genesis bring a lot to the table.
Having had the opportunity to experience both of these electric marvels on the road, I observed striking similarities as well as key distinctions. Notably, the Mercedes commands a significantly higher price tag compared to the Genesis. The question that looms large: Is the prestigious badge worth the premium?
Under the hood (or should we say, under the battery?), both of these SUVs are equipped with a dual-motor system, featuring one motor at the front and another nestled between the rear axles. This configuration grants them all-wheel drive capabilities, but the Mercedes-AMG EQE emerges as the powerhouse of the two. It boasts an impressive 617 horsepower and a staggering 701 lb-ft of torque. In contrast, the Genesis generates 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.
While the numbers may suggest a significant disparity, the Genesis GV70 manages to bridge the gap on the road, thanks in part to its lower curb weight. Notably, the Genesis Electrified GV70 surprises with a “boost” button on the steering wheel, momentarily elevating its power output to 489 horsepower for five seconds. Meanwhile, the Mercedes-AMG EQE counters with a “race start” function, momentarily amping its power rating to an astonishing 677 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque.
Both vehicles offer an abundance of power, likely more than one would ever need for typical street driving. However, in the context of power delivery and overall driving experience, the Genesis Electrified GV70’s power delivery and boost button held a slight edge in my book.
For anyone who’s had the privilege of sitting inside a Genesis vehicle, the praise for its interior is almost universal. Some might even go so far as to liken it to the interiors of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and it’s easy to see why. The GV70’s interior exudes a sense of refinement and sophistication. With its well-organized layout and tasteful design, it appeals to the eye.
Everywhere you look, there’s leather and soft-touch surfaces, contributing to a sense of luxury. The overall design leans toward minimalism, which adds to its aesthetic appeal. On the flip side, the Mercedes-AMG EQE maintains a similar sense of elegance and minimalism in its interior design, but it takes things up a notch in terms of tactile quality and materials used.
In a direct comparison, the Mercedes edges ahead with its superior touchpoints and material quality, offering an even more luxurious cabin. However, it’s important to note that the GV70’s interior still provides an exceptionally comfortable and refined environment that can rival some of the best in its class.
In the realm of tech features, the Genesis GV70 doesn’t disappoint. It comes equipped with a comprehensive set of tech amenities, including a premium audio system, heated and ventilated seats, and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These features enhance the overall driving experience and convenience.
However, the Mercedes-AMG EQE sets a new benchmark in this regard. It comes standard with the impressive 56-inch Hyperscreen, which integrates a large infotainment system in the center along with screens for both the driver and passenger. Additionally, its Burmester audio system is a class above, delivering an unparalleled audio experience. The inclusion of AI software allows for voice commands, such as saying “Hey Mercedes” to activate various features, from HVAC controls to seat functions.
While the Genesis GV70 offers a respectable range of tech features, the Mercedes-AMG EQE elevates the game with its Hyperscreen and advanced AI integration. It’s an undeniable advantage for tech enthusiasts and those seeking the utmost in connectivity and convenience.
On the electric front, the Mercedes-AMG EQE is touted to achieve up to 250 miles on a single charge, while the Genesis Electrified GV70 boasts a slightly lower range of up to 236 miles. In real-world conditions, where various factors come into play, the difference in mileage between these two vehicles proves to be negligible. Both are likely to run out of juice in a similar timeframe, making it a tie in terms of practical electric range.
Is the Extra Money Worth It?
Now, the question of whether the additional investment in the Mercedes-AMG EQE is justified looms large. A fully loaded 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 comes with a price tag of approximately ₦75,000,000 while a top-tier Mercedes-AMG EQE can soar up to ₦130,000,000 That’s a substantial ₦55,000,000 difference.
If shaving a mere second off your 0-60 mph time and indulging in a slightly more luxurious experience is your prerogative, then perhaps the Mercedes might make sense. However, considering the Genesis offers a luxurious experience that is more than satisfactory for its price point, it presents a compelling value proposition. The choice ultimately boils down to how far you’re willing to stretch your budget.
Mercedes-Benz undoubtedly brings craftsmanship and prestige to the table, but the Genesis GV70 offers an appealing blend of luxury and value. Ultimately, the decision hinges on your personal preferences and financial considerations, as both vehicles bring their own set of merits to the electric SUV arena.
