The Honda Accord remains one of the best sedans available in Nigeria, and the hybrid variant is a fantastic option for those prioritizing fuel efficiency. However, there are a few important things potential buyers should be aware of before purchasing a Honda Accord Hybrid in Nigeria.
While the Honda Accord is slightly less popular than the Civic, it’s still a favorite among Nigerian drivers. The Honda Accord Hybrid mirrors the design of its gas-powered counterpart but offers better fuel efficiency thanks to the hybrid battery, without compromising on luggage space. The base price of the 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid in Nigeria is approximately ₦13 million as of October 2024. Despite its many strengths, the vehicle has a few shortcomings noted by Consumer Reports test drivers.
The 2021 model introduced some tech upgrades like smartphone connectivity. However, Consumer Reports points out that the infotainment system can still be challenging for beginners. Basic controls often require several steps through multiple menus.
Fortunately, much of this difficulty can be bypassed by using the steering wheel controls and tuning knobs. Testers recommend organizing frequently used apps on the home screen for easy access. While the interface may take time to personalize, the system’s response speed and convenience features were praised.
The GPS works efficiently, and smartphone pairing is a simple process. Higher trims also offer power-adjustable seats, heated and ventilated seats, and leather upholstery.
In addition to its advanced infotainment system, the 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid features a push-button gear selector, which may take some getting used to. Without the tactile feedback of a traditional lever, drivers may find it tricky to confirm whether they’ve selected the right gear. This issue was especially noticeable during parking.
Once drivers adapt to the arrangement and feel of the buttons, however, the gear selector becomes easier to use. The Honda Accord Hybrid also features a suspension system that absorbs bumps well, and its handling is safe and predictable, though not particularly thrilling.
The 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, generating a combined 212 horsepower. While the engine is generally quiet, it becomes noticeably louder during highway acceleration or when climbing steep hills, partly due to the continuously variable transmission (CVT).
That said, the Accord Hybrid does a good job of blocking out external noise on the highway, and the electric motors allow for quick acceleration from a complete stop. It also boasts an impressive fuel economy of up to 48 mpg in the city and 47 mpg on the highway, with Consumer Reports recording 52 mpg during real-world highway driving. Although the Toyota Camry Hybrid is slightly more efficient, the Accord Hybrid’s performance is still commendable.
Two key safety features—blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert—are missing from the base trim of the Honda Accord Hybrid. However, starting from the Sport trim, these features are included. The EX-L trim adds front and rear parking sensors, and the highest Touring trim offers a head-up display.
All trims come with the Honda Sensing Suite, which includes collision avoidance systems and lane-departure warning. The adaptive cruise control system can also read traffic signs, providing added convenience and safety.
The 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid is a solid choice for those seeking fuel efficiency and reliability. However, some competitors offer more advanced features and may be slightly more dependable. While not without its flaws, the Accord Hybrid still provides great value for those who prioritize comfort, technology, and eco-friendly driving.
